NO BETSY NO

DEVOS MUST GO!

BETSY DEVOS
PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE
SECRETARY OF EDUCATION

Suffice it to say that the Education Secretary has massive responsibilities ,presides over a vast bureaucracy which influences all of this nation’s public schools – and all institutions of higher learning. Links to those sources appear at the end of this post if you wish to know more.

Information about billionaire Betsy DeVos, Donald Trump’s nominee for the Department of Education, abounds. I have, to date, spent tons of time listening, reading and watching so much of what is out there about her.

I imagined there must be a deeper story here. There’s not. It’s what it is, and perilously simple.

Betsy DeVos has nothing of value to contribute to the
job and to the education of our children.

Mrs. DeVos’s supporters celebrate her perseverance and passionate devotion in the cause of children and education.  They don’t mention her education or professional experience in the field, because she has none. Nor does she have any personal experience herself - or through her children - with public schools. Unlike most American parents with kids in college, she’s never taken out a school loan. Her sizeable investment in a student debt collection agency is as close as she has apparently come to the routine American experience of putting one’s children through school. So, what has all these Republicans loving her so for this job…..

“My family is the largest single contributor of soft money to the national Republican Party. I have decided to stop taking offense at the suggestion that we are buying influence,” she (DeVos)wrote. “Now I simply concede the point. They are right.”
....And there you have it......

Mrs. DeVos plans to dismantle the nation’s public school system, and institute a voucher program that would support networks of nonprofit and for-profit schools –including religiously affiliated as well as nonsectarian private schools.

These schools would be able to choose the students they wish to admit.  Certainly, especially the for-profit entities would be unlikely to choose ‘expensive’ children –those with learning disabilities or special needs or difficult behaviors - and they would not be held as accountable (if at all) for achieving educational standards currently mandated in our public schools.

School choice in the form of on-line learning programs, state sponsored, private and for profit charters schools and are not new. Most charter schools fail within 3 years. Because she was the driving force behind the disastrous school choice movement in Michigan, this is actually the one thing Betsy DeVos  does know from personal experience.
Also, Betsy DeVos looked no better for having apparently cherry picked and/or falsified grades and graduation statistics from her charter schools. Her outright lack of knowledge, alleged plagiarism when answering written questions put to her, and some sadly hilarious answers she gave to questions from some Senators didn’t help, either.  ABOUT NEUROCORE

As with charter schools, support of Neurocore seems solely based on the same one dimensional passion that DeVos - without evidence, education, experience- exhibits for privatizing public education. NOTE: The price for Neurocore’s therapy cycle is $2,000 per child.

From Wikopedia …“Betsy and her husband Dick are chief investors in and board members of Neurocore, a group of brain performance centers offering biofeedback therapy for disorders such as depression, attention deficit disorder, autism, and anxiety The therapy consists of showing movies to patients and interrupting them when they become distracted, in an effort to retrain their brains. According to The New York Times, a review of Neurocore’s claims and interviews with medical experts suggest that the company’s conclusions are unproven and its methods questionable. Democratic  senators  raised concerns about a potential conflict of interest and questioned whether she and her family members would “benefit financially from actions” she could take  as education secretary.  DeVos announced that she would step down from the company’s board but would retain her investment in the company, valued at $5 million to $25 million.”

Betsy DeVos CLEARLY should never have been nominated and should not be confirmed as Secretary of Education. It's just that simple.
